A Run-In With Tracksmith

Taylor Stitch is a proud San Francisco brand—just check the pockets on your favorite TS jeans for proof—but believe it or not, both of our co-founders are from Maine. We’ve never lost sight of our New England roots (in fact, we still maintain an office back home for our CX team), and this season’s DownEast collection is all about celebrating where we came from. Of course, New England’s boundaries extend well beyond Maine, so we’ve teamed up with Boston, MA’s Tracksmith to add some extra regional authenticity to the collection. First launching in 2014, Tracksmith has made a name for itself among running devotees with superior training, racing and recovery gear, and we’re thrilled to be working together.

Combining an activewear brand like Tracksmith’s technical leanings with Taylor Stitch’s heritage-inspired approach proved to be a unique challenge, but it’s always a good idea to step outside of your comfort zone once in a while. Luckily, initials aren’t the only thing our brands have in common: we both believe in setting big benchmarks and blowing right past them, and that philosophy is baked into the products we build. Superior craftsmanship, innovative materials, and a healthy dose of style—this collaboration showcases exactly what we’re all about without obscuring what makes each brand unique. In brief: this is running gear for people who don’t mind stopping to smell the roses along the way.

Sausalito, CA

We couldn’t miss a chance to show off our adopted home to the team at Tracksmith, so we embarked on an all-day buddy run through some of our favorite Bay Area locales. We kicked off the day with a visit to the famously picturesque Sausalito. Accessible from SF proper via The Golden Gate Bridge—or a ferry, if that’s more your style—Sausalito is a prime destination for both tourists and city dwellers looking for a breath of fresh ocean air. Beyond its stunning views of San Francisco’s skyline and wide selection of charming local restaurants and vendors, Sausalito has a rich historical and cultural heritage. Fun fact: Fleetwood Mac’s immortal Rumours was recorded in Sausalito at the now-defunct Record Plant. After a quick warm-up—and some piping hot coffee—we set off in earnest.

Marin Headlands, CA

No tour of Marin is complete without a trip to the Headlands. Even if you’ve never visited, its panoramic views will no doubt be familiar—photographers from all over the world flock to this elevated peninsula to capture moody shots of The Golden Gate bathed in fog. As iconic as that image has become, we prefer to visit on clear days so we can glimpse the infamous Alcatraz prison, The Bay Bridge that links SF to Oakland, Angel Island, and more. Thanks in part to the breathtaking views on offer, The Marin Headlands is a legendary spot for hikers, cyclists, and runners, with a ton of exceptionally beautiful and challenging trails and roads to explore.

If you can only make time for one trail run during your next visit to The Bay Area, you could do a lot worse than The Dipsea

Dipsea Trail — Mill Valley, CA

Next on our tour, we hit The Dipsea Trail, home to the oldest trail race in the US—first run a whopping 115 years ago! Across its seven-mile stretch, Dipsea offers some incredible sights, including sweeping coastal views, crystal clear pools and waterfalls, and lush forests. Starting from Mill Valley, the Dipsea Trail ascends Mt. Tam and passes through the verdant Muir Woods before reaching Stinson Beach. If you can only make time for one trail run during your next visit to The Bay Area, you could do a lot worse than The Dipsea.

There’s no better way to breathe fresh life into familiar places than sharing them with new buddies

Our long day ended at Stinson Beach, where we caught our breath, cracked some cold ones and celebrated a successful run—and the start of an awesome collaboration. There’s no better way to breathe fresh life into familiar places than sharing them with new buddies, and we think that principle applies to building gear, too. Together with Tracksmith, we injected some serious innovation into classic, beloved styles to help you shave some minutes off of your mile time. These are timeless silhouettes, but they’re built with cutting-edge technical materials developed specifically for athletes by Tracksmith’s R&D department. We had a blast working and hanging with our new buds, and next time around, we hope we can join them for a run on their home turf in Boston. Count us out until springtime, though—we may be from Maine, but we’re no masochists.
