More than fifty years ago, UC Santa Cruz students Eric Reynolds and Dave Huntley returned to California after two months of glacier hiking with the idea of building an all-welcoming, free-wheeling community of fellow outdoor enthusiasts. That idea, spawned on an Alaskan ice shelf 2,300 miles away, became The Marmot Club.
The rules of the club were simple:
- To become a member, you’ve got to bag a peak with another member, and once you achieve that, you are president of the club.
- Everyone is president.
Soon after founding the club, Eric and Dave took to crafting their own outdoor gear in their UC dorm room, and Marmot Mountain Works was born.
It’s been a long road (or trail, or slope) since then, with countless peaks conquered and rough terrain traversed along the way, and through it all, Marmot has maintained that oddball spirit of getting together with friends and making the outdoors your playground.
With The 1971 Collection, we’ve teamed up with the Marmot team on a limited curation of gear inspired by the early days of The Marmot Club. While the designs wear their vintage influence on their sleeves, the run of innovations that Marmot has made since the 70s imbues each piece with the grit and technical ability to meet the demands of today’s hikers, backpackers, and outdoor explorers.
From the feature-rich Owens Parka with its multi-layer Gore-Tex membrane (a first for Taylor Stitch) to the insulative Trail Fleece to break the chill, and Scramble Pant with the feature-rich utility for any endeavor, this collection is designed to (just like The Marmot Club’s founders) go from adventure outdoors to après with friends without skipping a beat.
Crafted with an emphasis on environmental Responsibility, high-quality technical performance, and timeless style, The 1971 Collection is our ode to the free-spirited glory days of outdoor exploration and an invitation to get out there, find your peak, and bag it.
