What Is Selvedge Denim?
These days, most denim is made on highly efficient projectile looms that cut the weft (horizontal yarns) of the denim to create the edge of the fabric. The frayed edge then needs an overlock stitch to keep the denim from falling apart. In contrast, selvedge denim is woven on slower, older shuttle looms that pass the weft yarns over themselves at the edge of the fabric, creating a “self-edge” that is much stronger than the cut-and-sew edges of projectile looms. In addition to the more durable build, the slower shuttle looms create denim with more textural nuance, resulting in far better fades down the line. Democratic & Slim Jeans - Understanding Our Fits
Our two fits are the result of years of meticulous R&D. Both fits are a classic medium-rise, with Democratic offering a bit more room in the thigh and tapering nicely from knee to ankle, and our Slim fit (still far from skinny) tapering gently through the thigh, knee, and calf. If heavy squats or long cycling excursions are part of your weekly routine, we recommend Democratic. If you’re a trim-legged dude, go for our Slim jeans. How To Patch Your Jeans
One of our favorite things about denim is the way that it ages. Over the years, your favorite pair of jeans becomes a roadmap of memories and adventures shared. So when your jeans eventually develop a hole, don’t send them off to the landfill; give them a new lease on life with sashiko visible mending. For a full tutorial, check out our Denim Repair Guide.
