Ladies Club: Rhea Cortado of The Surftorialist
The ultimate goal for most of us is finding a profession that caters to our dream lifestyle. For some this means a 9-5 job with a salary to buy you all that you need, for others, it's ensuring that the job you do is one you love, the salary pays just enough to fulfill all other dreams and you don't find yourself confined to office hours. Making you totally free to move about the cabin, if you catch my drit. The lovely women of The Ladies Club have all achieved just that, and for that we find them totally aspirational. "You choose what's important to you and how you want to live." This is the one liner to remember and it comes from our newest member of the club, Rhea Cortado.
Rhea of The Surftorialist is one gal who fit the bill to the T. As the name of her blog might suggest, she's found a job that allows her to get to the beach on a very, very regular basis. Trained in traditional print media, she now covers much more ground than just that- writing for industry rags (Transworld Business, Surf Expo) and lifestyle mags (Surfgirl, Foam) and cool activewear brands like Seea- who's bikini and surf suit she brought to the beach with us. Needless to say, she hops on a plane, train, or automobile seeking new adventures, whenever she can. Head over to her blog and read some of her many great write ups - each one is a pleasure.
In the spirit of warmer weather and beach days ahead, we caught up with Rhea on the beach near her home in Venice, CA. She shows us how a colorful surfgirl eases TS into the beach bag.
How do you decompress? Reading amazing stories I wish I wrote, going surfing, walking our sassy dog Walter and riding my beach cruiser on the Venice bike path. The rhythm of chopping vegetables and cooking relaxes me too.
Place you'd most like to live? I know I'm destined to end up in Hawaii or some ex-pat hippie beach enclave in Mexico or Central America. I've lived in California all my life but it still amazes me and it will always be home.
Style icon? Kate Moss
Favorite meals? Fish tacos, salads with fancy greens, my mom's chicken adobo with rice, roasted vegetables.
Wardrobe essentials? Seea swimsuits, super soft T-shirts, vintage ugly sweaters, selvage denim, Vans sneakers, vintage whimsical psychadelic Aloha print dresses.
Your best accessory? My hair, something colorful, and smiling gets you far.
Ideal trip? Driving along any coast of point breaks (Peru and Morocco are on the list) with my boyfriend hunting for surf and exploring on land with our dog Walter.
And last but not least! Your style mantra? Be the best at yourself.
