The 1971 Rolex GMT.

For the past couple years we have partnered with our close friends down at Fourtané to bring you a selection of vintage Rolex timepieces. They are widely reconized as having a stronghold on the vintage Rolex marketplace and we are extremely excited to continue to work with them. This piece as well as a grouping of other fine pieces are available at our 383 Valencia Street shop in the Mission District. A bit more about the Rolex GMT to follow from the fine folks down south...

The Rolex GMT was originally designed in 1954 for the Pan Am Airways crew members during long haul flights. It features a fourth hand and rotating bezel that allows you to tell the time in three different zones.  This time tested piece has been worn by the likes of Fidel Castro, Che Guevara, Clint Eastwood, and Tom Selleck (yes, Magnum PI wore this watch). The Rolex GMT was even worn to the moon. The GMT was released in other popular color ways such as the black and red "Coke" dial as well as the gold and brown "Rootbeer", but none stand more iconic than the blue and red "Pepsi" dial.  In 2005 the 50th anniversary GMT was released with a new black ceramic bezel. The release of the anniversary edition has re-inspired collectors to hunt down the original GMT. In part because the development of Rolex's new ceramic bezel they have yet to achieve a consistent red making the vintage "Pepsi" dial a true collectors item. There is no substitute for the original.
